A Savage Song by Cathy Turner - 1994 PDF Print E-mail
ImageA Savage Song is a small-scale theatrical masterpiece, from the pen of our regular playwright Cathy Turner, weaving comedy and high drama through a touching human story.

This musical piece is based on real events, which occurred just over 100 years ago. A time of empire building, when railroads were railroading, and great entrepreneurial ventures clashed with existing vested interests. In rural England, land was being enclosed, fences erected and the countryside was turning into its now familiar patchwork pattern.

A Savage Song shows the sparks that fly when clean-shaven Sir Charles meets old Jack Savage, becoming caught up in a bitter, but often hilarious battle of wills. The mischievous Savage family, earnest Sir Charles and his loyal servent, bad-tempered Mr Moxey and the nosey neighbours are just some of the characters in a lively community, torn apart by a tragic conflict between the old world and the new.

A Savage Song combines live music and ballad singing with high energy and up-front engaging performances. It's an innovative play, with masks, false noses, and lightning costume changes. Over the course of the evening, the five virtuoso performers playfully engage the audience in the story: you may be asked to put up the fence, tear it down or sit on it if you must. It's a chance to come and hiss and boo in the wintertime, in a place visually transformed and warmed up especially for you.

A Savage Song provides a good, action packed and enthralling night out, roller coasting you along a tale which will tickle your ribs, warm your heart and send you home humming.
