The Common Players has a small administration team based in Exeter, Devon, U.K., at any one time is drawn from a core of professional performers, artists and technicians who, while working nationally, are also keen to work with The Common Players. Common Players are currently:
As with any company, faces come and go, changing from year to year. The Common Players are a registered charity no. 1061431 and are managed by an enthusiastic board of management, comprising Philip Bailey, Maurice Marshal, Richard Fettham, Richard Jennings and Hannah Reynolds. The Common Players was formed in 1989, setting out to create accessible theatre and tour it around the village greens of Devon during the summer months. The intention was to tell stories that involved audiences on different levels so that there was something for everyone to enjoy, no matter their age. In true Strolling Player style, the company walked from village to village, camping overnight before moving on in the morning. As time passed, the desire to undertake more ambitious productions grew, and for the past six years the players have travelled in a van that is packed with set and props, towing a caravan that becomes part of the ingenious sets. The Common Players now tour not only to the village greens of Devon, but much further afield covering the length and breadth of the country. The company may have changed over the years, but the philosophy remains the same; to create exciting, relevant and original theatre, both for and with the people who, usually because of where they live, have little chance to experience the excitement of live performance. |
