On 6th January 2001, Common Players initiated a community celebration in the small town of Bradninch in Devon.
In response to a community looking for something for its’ young people to do to “Keep them off the streets”, we set up the following activities, working with Articulture and Raventales.
The Mayor ceremoniously cut down the Town Christmas tree and then, the whole group, of over 200 people made their way to a nearby site where the lanterns were piled next to the giant sculptures and set on fire. Raventales sang and performed a mummers play, and hot food and drink was enjoyed by all. Since then, Common Players have helped the event happen annually, and have decreased their input as local people and groups have taken over responsibility for different aspects. The event has gathered interest, including two live outside broadcasts by local BBC TV. Last year the company just provided lighting for the event which saw the Town Baptist church, the Scouts, the Playgroup and the Music Group, leading over 400 people in their own unique celebration. |
